Emergency Response Activated After Gas Leak on Bow Guardian in Elbe

Oct 20, 2017 12:56

On October 19, 2017, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a gas leak incident involving the tanker 'Bow Guardian' occurred on the Elbe River near Stade. The leak was initiated by a malfunction in a pump, which resulted in highly explosive gas escaping through a high-pressure vent. At the time of the incident, the 'Bow Guardian' was in a waiting position, preparing to offload its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cargo at a nearby industrial port. In response to the emergency, local water police established a 1,000-meter safety perimeter around the vessel, halting all maritime traffic in the vicinity. Approximately 120 rescue personnel were deployed to the scene, including members of Hamburg's Analytical Task Force, who assisted in monitoring gas concentration levels in the area. As a precautionary measure, around 200 residents of nearby Abbenfleth were evacuated from their homes. These residents were later permitted to return around 2 a.m. on October 20, after authorities confirmed the situation was under control. Meanwhile, residents in the surrounding areas were instructed to keep their doors and windows closed until the leak was successfully sealed. This strategic move highlights Lauritzen Kosan’s commitment to enhancing its operational capabilities within the ethylene gas shipping industry. Thomas Wøidemann, President of Lauritzen Kosan, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the agreement, stating, 'I am very pleased with the agreement with Odfjell Gas as it will strengthen our position in the ethylene gas carrier segment.'
