Historic Departure of 'Captain Leonidas' Marks Milestone for Ukrainian Trade

Apr 07, 2024 16:32

In a significant development for Ukraine's maritime industry, the bulk carrier 'Captain Leonidas' has set sail from Yuzhny, marking the largest vessel to dock in the nation since the onset of the Russian invasion. This pivotal departure was reported by the Ministry of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure on April 6, 2024. The 'Captain Leonidas' has commenced the export of 195,700 tons of goods produced by Ukrainian metallurgical companies. Since August 2023, the strategically vital Ukrainian maritime corridor has facilitated the export of over 36 million tons of cargo, including the passage of 1,286 ships that have successfully shipped 25 million tons of agricultural products to various destinations across Asia, Africa, and Europe. Currently, an additional 135 vessels are on standby, poised to approach the ports in the Odessa region, anticipated to export another 4 million tons of diverse cargoes. Notably, the performance metrics of the Ukrainian maritime corridor have surpassed the outcomes of the previously established grain agreement, which was undermined following Russia's military actions against Ukraine. This evolving situation underscores the resilience and adaptability of Ukraine's maritime operations amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
