Investigation Launched into Crew Working Conditions on Carnival Encounter
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has announced an investigation into the luxurious cruise ship, Carnival Encounter, amid serious allegations concerning the welfare of its crew. Whistleblower reports suggest that conditions for crew members on the vessel are far from ideal, featuring overcrowded living quarters, insufficient drinking water, and alarmingly low wages. These claims were brought to light by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) following the ship's arrival in Darwin on February 8, 2026. AMSA officials boarded the Carnival Encounter to assess the validity of these distressing assertions. Preliminary findings have revealed troubling details about crew conditions, including: - Employees are allegedly earning as little as $2.50 per hour. - Many crew members are reported to be working over 10 hours each day for more than 30 consecutive days. - The only free drinking water provided is claimed to be of substandard quality. - Crew members are allegedly confined to cramped quarters, heightening the risk of health complications. Shane Reside, the MUA's Sydney branch organizer, stated that the union has received a rising number of complaints over the past six months, including issues related to low pay and exploitative working environments. Some crew members have reportedly suffered from serious health problems while being compelled to continue their duties. Reside sought to investigate further by attempting to board the vessel in Sydney in December, but was denied access. Concerns about the availability of clean drinking water on board have also been raised by the MUA. According to Reside, while both passengers and officers receive complimentary water, crew members either have to accept the poor-quality water provided or must purchase bottled water for approximately 70 cents each. The union has accused Carnival Cruise Line of taking advantage of legal loopholes, enabling the hiring of foreign crew without the protection of Australian labor regulations. Reside fears that these detrimental conditions may be common throughout the entire Carnival fleet. Andy Burford, Northern Territory branch secretary of the MUA, criticized Carnival for its approach to labor, opting to employ workers from economically disadvantaged regions while enjoying substantial profits. He underscored the implications of allowing foreign-owned companies to operate within Australian waters without compliance with local laws. The AMSA is dedicated to thoroughly investigating the claims concerning crew member health and safety in accordance with the Maritime Labour Convention and other relevant regulations. Should any violations be confirmed throughout the investigation, appropriate actions will be taken. The situation remains under close watch as the inquiry develops.
