Dramatic Incident on Carnival Splendor: Passenger Jumps Overboard and Woman Found Deceased While Snorkeling

Apr 21, 2026 12:38

An intense search operation was initiated after a male passenger aged in his 70s jumped overboard from the 'Carnival Splendor' as it made its voyage from Moreton Island towards Sydney. The cruise ship was in the midst of a four-day round-trip journey scheduled to return on April 19, 2026. The incident occurred on the night of April 17, approximately 30 kilometres northeast of Moreton Island, when the man reportedly climbed over the ship's safety railing and leapt into the water. Family members of the individual quickly alerted the crew when they noticed he was missing. A review of onboard CCTV footage confirmed this troubling action. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) swiftly commenced a thorough search operation that included both aerial and naval resources. This coordinated effort involved Challenger jets based in Cairns and Melbourne, five rescue helicopters from the Brisbane metropolitan area, and six surface vessels, with the Queensland Police also supporting AMSA in their search efforts. In the meantime, Carnival Cruise Line collaborated with authorities during the investigation upon the ship's return to Sydney. The company also provided assistance through its Care Team to support the family of the guest involved. The 'Carnival Splendor' departed the area on April 19 at 3 p.m. local time and arrived in Sydney by 6 p.m. Passengers on the next sailing of the Splendor, leaving April 19, were notified via text about delays in check-in and embarkation due to the incident. Adding to the day's tragedy, a 67-year-old Australian woman was found unresponsive while snorkeling off Moreton Island on the same day. Despite immediate attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before the male passenger went overboard. Authorities have confirmed that there is no indication connecting the two incidents. On April 21, the Queensland Police announced the suspension of the search efforts for the man, having deployed multiple emergency services in the attempt to locate him.

Carnival Splendor Rescues Blogging Couple and Friends Stranded at Sea

May 23, 2025 22:45

On May 22, 2025, the crew aboard the Carnival Splendor played the role of rescuers as they saved four individuals from the disabled catamaran, LA Vita, off the coast of New Caledonia. Among those rescued were two Australians, known for their YouTube channel, Sailing Barking Cat. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Noumea alerted the cruise ship around midnight concerning the distress call from the stranded vessel. The adventurous couple had embarked on their journey from Australia and were aiming for Fiji, accompanied by their two French bulldogs and a mini husky. They had set sail on May 14 with another couple, hailing from Germany and Italy. Unfortunately, their trip turned perilous when their engine failed and their mast broke due to severe weather conditions, leaving them adrift on the open water at night. In a timely response, the Carnival Splendor located the LA Vita and executed a successful rescue operation, reaching the stranded sailors within five hours. Upon retrieval, they were provided with essential provisions including food, water, and medical assistance. The Carnival Splendor had commenced its voyage from Sydney on May 19, embarking on an eight-day cruise to picturesque destinations including Vanuatu and New Caledonia. The rescued group was subsequently transported to Noumea. For additional details and images of the rescue, refer to the reports from 9News and 7News.

On the night of December 15, 2022, a medical emergency unfolded on the 'Carnival Splendor' as an ill passenger required urgent medevac while the cruise vessel was navigating off the coast of Seal Rocks, approximately 30 kilometers from land on its journey from Sydney to Moreton. Carnival Splendor Faces Delay Due to Engine Issues in Los Angeles Port

May 27, 2019 11:58

The Carnival Splendor is currently docked at the Port of Los Angeles, encountering technical difficulties related to its engine. This unforeseen issue has resulted in the cancellation of one of its planned port stops. In response, Carnival Cruise Line has dispatched a specialized technician to assist with the necessary repairs. Originally, the vessel was set to embark on a week-long journey beginning on May 25, 2019. As of 5 a.m., the Carnival Splendor has vacated the pier and is now anchored in the harbor, making room for the arrival of the Carnival Imagination, which has just completed a 3-day cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. Despite the circumstances, the crew continues to offer a full schedule of entertainment, ensuring that onboard operations remain unaffected. The itinerary, which now features visits to Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, has faced adjustments due to the delays, resulting in the cancellation of the cruise's stop in Mazatlan. To compensate the affected guests, Carnival is providing a credit of $50.00 per person to their Sail & Sign accounts. Additionally, refunds for any applicable taxes, fees, port expenses, and pre-reserved shore excursions in Mazatlan will be credited as well. Shore excursions for Cabo San Lucas will be rescheduled to match the new arrival date. The Carnival Splendor is anticipated to set sail on May 26, around midnight, with its expected arrival in Cabo San Lucas scheduled for May 28 at approximately 6 p.m.
