Successful SAR Operation Rescues Distressed Vessel near Isle of Portland
On October 6, 2014, at 5:35 PM, the tanker 'JS Alular', while navigating through the Caskets traffic separation zone, received a mayday call from an unidentified vessel in distress. The alarming message indicated a position within the English coastal zone, prompting an immediate response from CROSS Jobourg. The agency quickly reached out to the Coastguard Maritime Rescue Center Solent, which took the lead in coordinating a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation. To bolster the rescue efforts, CROSS Jobourg proposed the deployment of an EC 225 helicopter from the French Navy stationed in Maupertus. By 9:15 PM, this helicopter joined the search efforts, under the coordination of MRCC Solent. Additionally, the UK’s Maritime Coastguard Rescue Center responded by dispatching two helicopters from the English Coastguards, two lifeboats, the helicopter from the British frigate HMS 'St Alban', as well as the EC 225 helicopter from Maupertus. Although flights were temporarily halted around 11 PM, the search persisted throughout the night. Remarkably, at 7:15 AM on October 7, HMS 'St Alban' located the distressed vessel, which had one individual on board, approximately 33 kilometers west of the Isle of Portland.
