On July 2, 2023, the LNG tanker JS Chukar encountered difficulties and ran aground in the Kerch Strait while traveling from Istanbul to Kerch. Local news outlets, including kerch.fm and kerch.com.ua, reported that the vessel was in ballast condition and on its way to Kerch for an LNG shipment that was scheduled to return to Istanbul. The JS Chukar grounded during daylight hours but was successfully refloated approximately six hours later, thanks to the assistance of tugboats. Following the incident, the tanker anchored close to the grounding site to undergo a thorough inspection. As of 0100 UTC on July 4, the vessel remained in the same location near a heavily trafficked corridor of the Kerch Strait, raising concerns that it might be experiencing further issues that prevent it from resuming its journey.
