The Charlotte-Theresa: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

The St. Lawrence Seaway has officially launched its 2014 season at St. Lambert, marking a significant moment for maritime traffic in the region. Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) announced that the first vessel to enter the seaway this year is the MT Charlotte Theresa, which is headed for Lake Ontario. Following this initial arrival, several Canadian vessels are expected to follow suit. According to Jason Skorksi, General Manager (Eastern Canada) of ISS Canada, this season is anticipated to present challenges, particularly due to the presence of heavy ice and pack ice impacting the navigational routes. Currently, the seaway is accommodating upbound traffic in the Montreal/MLO section, but it's operating under one-way traffic regulations. Navigational safety is paramount, necessitating double pilotage and exclusive daylight navigation to ensure safe passage. Additionally, escorts are compulsory for vessels crossing the lakes, including Lac St. Louis and Lake St. Francis. The HMCCGC Martha L Black icebreaker is actively working in the Montreal/MLO sector, while two tugs are also deployed in the South Shore Canal to help manage ice flow. In a coordinated effort, the HMCGC Radisson is moving toward Whitefish Bay to assist in leading convoys as required, with two icebreakers currently stationed in Thunder Bay, specifically dedicated to facilitating harbor breakout operations.
