Daring Medevac Operation Rescues Injured Crew Member Near A Coruña
On July 31, 2023, at precisely 3:00 p.m., a medical emergency unfolded aboard the 'Chem Norma', a vessel traveling from Rotterdam to Houston. The crew urgently requested a medevac for an injured member. In response, the CCS Fisterra promptly deployed the SAR helicopter Helimer 402, which successfully hoisted the injured crew member from a location 190 nautical miles offshore. Investigation Underway for 'Chem Norma' Tanker Grounding Incident
Federal safety authorities have launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the grounding of the tanker 'Chem Norma' along the St. Lawrence River. The vessel, which was en route from Amsterdam to Sarnia, Ontario, ran aground in the early hours of May 29, near Morrisburg, approximately 75 kilometers southeast of Ottawa. On June 8, investigators specializing in marine accidents boarded the tanker to begin their assessments, with preliminary findings expected to be released within the next week. The 'Chem Norma' was successfully freed from the riverbank on June 3, under the supervision of both federal and provincial officials.
Chem Norma Successfully Refloated After Days of Stagnation
In a successful operation, the tanker Chem Norma was refloated on June 3 at precisely 3:50 p.m., following strategic water level adjustments made by the St. Lawrence River Board. The reduction of water flow in the St. Lawrence River allowed for a rise in water levels, facilitating the vessel's release. Once refloated, tugs were deployed to guide the Chem Norma into deeper waters. The tanker then proceeded to the Iroquois Lock for inspections, arriving there on June 4 at 3 a.m. Inspectors will determine the integrity of the vessel; if no significant damage is detected, the Chem Norma will resume its journey to Sarnia.
