Two Engineers Rescued After Lifeboat Incident In Atlantic

Feb 07, 2019 09:36

On February 6, 2019, at approximately 6:30 PM, the tanker Chemtrans Nova experienced a critical incident approximately 75 miles southeast of Delaware Bay, near Chincoteague, Virginia, in the Atlantic Ocean. During routine maintenance work, two engineers encountered a dangerous situation when the enclosed lifeboat they were servicing unexpectedly detached and fell into the sea. The crew promptly alerted the U.S. Coast Guard, which rapidly deployed the nearby cutter Reliance for assistance. The lucky timing of the Reliance's position allowed for a swift rescue, with one engineer retrieved directly from the water while the other was rescued from the lifeboat. Both men sustained injuries—including a lacerated stomach and a broken leg—prompting a coordinated emergency response. A U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon aircraft provided essential communication relay support, as an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City was dispatched for medical evacuation. The injured crew members were successfully transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Following the event, the Chemtrans Nova resumed its journey from Marcus Hook to the Bahamas just five hours later, post-incident.
