Tanker 'Christina' Averted Disaster After Engine Failure Near Bud

Oct 23, 2019 17:22

On October 23, 2019, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the oil tanker 'Christina' experienced a critical engine failure while navigating the waters near Bud in Hustadvika, Møre og Romsdal. As the vessel began to drift towards rocky shores, the crew promptly issued a Mayday call for urgent assistance. The 'Christina', carrying a crew of 15 and transporting 400 tons of bunker oil, had departed earlier that day from Elnesvågen at 1:45 p.m. and was en route to Aberdeen amidst challenging weather conditions marked by storms. Fortunately, the fish farm supply vessel 'Frøy Harvest' (MMSI: 257170000) was just 30 sailing minutes away. Without hesitation, it redirected its course to assist the stricken tanker, which attempted to anchor in an emergency maneuver to halt its drift. The Frøy Harvest successfully established a towing connection, stabilizing the 'Christina' until the Norwegian tug 'Vivax' (IMO: 9429546) arrived on the scene shortly thereafter. As a precautionary measure, search and rescue (SAR) helicopters were also dispatched and prepared for a potential crew evacuation, arriving simultaneously with the tugboat. By 4:00 p.m., the two vessels commenced a coordinated effort to tow the 'Christina' back to safety at the quay in Elnesvågen. The helicopters were called off at 4:20 p.m. once the situation was secure and the Mayday was officially lifted. The convoy successfully returned to Elnesvågen by 8:40 p.m. Following repairs, the 'Christina' set sail again on October 28 at 6:20 p.m., heading for Antwerp, with an expected arrival on October 31 at 7:00 a.m. For more details and photographs, you can check out the following links: [iLaks](https://ilaks.no/tankbat-fikk-motorstopp-og-var-naer-ved-a-ga-pa-land-reddet-av-froy-harvest/), [NRK](https://www.nrk.no/mr/tankbat-med-motorstopp-1.14753965), [TK](https://www.tk.no/hustadvika), [RB Nett](https://www.rbnett.no/nyheter/2019/10/23/Tankb%C3%A5t-fikk-motorstans-utenfor-Bud-20232241.ece).
