Working Conditions Aboard the Chrysanthemum

On September 29, 2020, a dramatic medevac operation unfolded 225 miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas, when the U.S. Coast Guard came to the aid of a 28-year-old male crew member aboard the tanker 'Chrysanthemum'. The emergency was initiated after the captain reported that the crew member was suffering from severe abdominal pain. Coast Guard District Eight watchstanders swiftly sprang into action, consulting with a duty flight surgeon who promptly recommended that a medevac be conducted. In response, a dedicated team from Coast Guard Air Station Houston deployed an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, while the Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi dispatched an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft to the scene. The helicopter crew skillfully hoisted the patient to safety and transported him to awaiting emergency medical services at Ellington Airport in Houston. Fortunately, upon arrival, the individual was reported to be in stable condition, thanks to the rapid and effective response of the Coast Guard teams involved.
