Rescue Operations Near Canary Islands Save 180 Migrants

Jan 07, 2024 17:29

In a remarkable display of maritime rescue efforts, a series of operations unfolded between the night of January 6 and the morning of January 7, 2024, near the Canary Islands, resulting in the safe assistance of 180 migrants aboard three different boats. Among those rescued were six women, highlighting the ongoing migration crisis in the region. On January 7, at approximately 8:24 a.m. local time, the 'Bencomo Express' notified the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Tenerife about a drifting canoe spotted near Los Cristianos. The 'Salvamar Alpheratz' was activated, arriving at 9:30 a.m. to find the canoe adrift with 39 sub-Saharan men aboard, all of whom were subsequently rescued and transported to the port of Los Cristianos, with the abandoned canoe in tow. Earlier on January 6, the Civil Guard alerted the MRCC about another canoe located about 11 kilometers south of El Hierro. The 'Concepción Arenal' was dispatched and successfully located the vessel at 8:25 p.m. The rescue operation facilitated the safe disembarkation of 87 sub-Saharan migrants, including six women, at the La Restinga dock a short while later. Adding to the rescue efforts, the Sasemar 101 aircraft identified another boat situated over 90 kilometers south of Gran Canaria, leading to the deployment of the 'Salvamar Macondo'. The MRCC redirected the 'CL Fugou' to assist in this operation, providing real-time course updates. By around 8:30 p.m., the 'Salvamar Macondo' reached the boat and successfully rescued 54 individuals, all North Africans, who were subsequently disembarked at Arguineguín dock after 11 p.m. These coordinated efforts reflect a continued commitment to safeguarding lives amidst challenging conditions at sea, underlining the critical role of both merchant and search-and-rescue vessels in humanitarian missions.
