Russia Executes Double Ship-to-Ship LNG Transfer Amid EU Sanctions

Apr 01, 2025 10:26

In a strategic response to the recent European Union ban on Russian LNG transshipments, Russia successfully carried out a double ship-to-ship (STS) transfer involving four LNG tankers near Murmansk. The operation, conducted between March 28 and March 31, 2025, featured the 'Nikolay Urvantsev' (IMO: 9750660) and 'Vladimir Rusanov' (IMO: 9750701), both operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd, who met with the 'Lena River' (IMO: 9629598) and 'Clean Vision' for this unconventional transfer at the Kildin anchorage. All four vessels were transporting supercooled liquefied natural gas from the Yamal LNG project, a venture led by the Russian company Novatek. The 'Lena River', which had embarked on its journey from China in late 2024, had been anchored in various northern waters, including the North Sea, Celtic Sea, and Barents Sea, prior to the STS transfer. Meanwhile, the 'Clean Vision' departed from Mirs Bay near Shenzhen on February 21 and both the 'Nikolay Urvantsev' and 'Vladimir Rusanov' set sail from the Yamal LNG facility approximately a week before the operation, which typically spans 36 to 48 hours.
