Repairs Completed on Columbia Highway Following Storm Damage in Emden

Apr 04, 2015 10:40

On April 3, the cargo vessel 'Columbia Highway' departed from Ems Quay in Emden, heading towards Port Said with an estimated arrival date of April 12. The ship underwent urgent repairs to a 1.5-meter-long gash on its stern, which was caused by strong winds from storm Niklas that had thrust the vessel against the newly constructed quay. Fortunately, the damage was above the water line, minimizing the risk of catastrophic failure. Investigations into the incident by the Emden water police are still ongoing, as the ship, despite being securely moored, broke free from all its moorings. Car Carrier 'Columbia Highway' Breaks Free in Emden During Storm Niklas

Mar 31, 2015 21:43

On March 31, 2015, the car carrier 'Columbia Highway' experienced a harrowing incident at the Ems Pier in Emden after breaking free from its moorings amidst the powerful winds of storm Niklas. The vessel, which had just arrived from Southampton, lost all nine of its mooring wires, resulting in its stern repeatedly slamming against the quay. This violent motion caused a significant gash measuring 30 centimeters along the starboard side of the ship, in addition to causing damage to the quay itself. Tugs battled for several hours to securely maneuver the 'Columbia Highway' back to her berth. The tug 'Waterstraat' played a crucial role in stabilizing the car carrier overnight after it was successfully re-docked. The ship, initially scheduled to depart for Deeme as its next port of call, has been restricted from leaving for safety reasons.
