Engine Malfunction Strikes Suspected Shadow Tanker 'Conga' in Kiel Canal
In the early hours of March 6, 2025, the 'Conga', a tanker suspected of shadow operations, encountered significant engine failure while navigating the Kiel Canal. The incident occurred at 3:30 a.m. near the Rade switch. Just the previous day, upon entering the canal at 4:20 p.m., the vessel had already shown signs of engine distress, prompting it to dock in Brunsbüttel for repairs by 4:40 p.m. After a brief delay, the ship continued its journey at 7:30 p.m. Unfortunately, the 'Conga' experienced a second engine malfunction, necessitating the urgent assistance of the tug 'Stein' (IMO: 9241243), which was dispatched from Kiel, joined by another tug, 'Wulf 4' (IMO: 9639737). The vessel was successfully towed to the North Port of Kiel by 10 a.m., where it underwent repairs on its primary engine, which the crew had managed to restart temporarily. This incident follows a previous engine failure in Brunsbüttel, and local authorities have since imposed a sailing ban on the tanker while it is subjected to a Port State Control (PSC) inspection. The ship was on a voyage from Misurata after transporting oil from the Russian port of Primorsk, where it had departed on January 26. Although no official details have been released concerning its Russian loading port, the 'Conga' remains off the list of 153 vessels currently sanctioned by the EU as it was navigating for further orders at the time of the incident. Previously, in August 2024, the 'Conga' had drawn scrutiny for its involvement in oil shipments from Russia, specifically during a ship-to-ship transfer of diesel oil to the tanker 'Kizomba' just off the coast of Sicily. Following repairs, the 'Conga' is scheduled to leave Kiel on March 8, with its next destination being Misurata, expected to arrive by March 12.
