Drug Dumping Incident Involving 'Cool Explorer' and 'Cool Eagle' Under Investigation

Mar 17, 2025 11:28

The National Unit for Special Crimes has initiated criminal proceedings against two vessels, the 'Cool Explorer' and 'Cool Eagle,' for allegedly dumping a staggering 1,636 kilograms of cocaine into Danish waters. This illicit activity was reported to have taken place in the spring and summer of 2024 while the ships were en route from South America to Russia, according to two formal indictments set to be adjudicated at the district courts in Holbæk and Svendborg. On March 15 at 1:30 a.m., 818 kilograms of cocaine were discarded near Samsø from the 'Cool Explorer.' A month later, the 'Cool Eagle' reportedly dumped 120 kilograms near Romsø. The same vessel returned on July 23, releasing a similar quantity off the northern shores of Langeland. The following month, on August 24, the 'Cool Explorer' made another drop, this time of 578 kilograms, in the same area, according to the court documents. All these operations occurred under the cover of night, as detailed in the indictment. Multiple groups of men, believed to have traveled specifically to Denmark for these activities, were involved. Although two successful recoveries of 120 kilograms were made by the recipients, many attempts ended in failure. Authorities first became aware of the illicit operations when local hikers discovered suspicious packages along the beaches of Sejerø Bay. The indictment outlines the extensive efforts by the drug recipients, which included chartering a vessel from Höganäs to search for the lost drugs along the 'Cool Explorer’s' route. Furthermore, one individual was reported to have driven to the port of Aarhus to collect the cargo, later acquiring a remote-controlled drone from Elgiganten in Horsens, purportedly to assist in the search on Samsø, but these attempts proved futile as the cocaine washed ashore. In relation to the 578 kilograms dropped at Langeland, an Albanian male has confessed to his involvement, claiming he was instructed in Belgium. Meanwhile, five other Albanian suspects have pleaded not guilty, with their cases pending. Additional details revealed that two defendants were also purportedly involved in the incidents of the two 120-kilogram drops, utilizing rented cars with German plates, securing a summer house in Tranekær, and employing a boat trailer to reach Langeland. Some suspects allegedly documented coastal areas, including Bøgebjerg Strand, while staying at Camp Hverringe in Dalby. The district courts in Holbæk and Svendborg are set to determine the guilt of these defendants, with proceedings for two individuals commencing in Holbæk this September. The timeline for the trials involving the five additional defendants in Svendborg remains undetermined.
