Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker NUC Sighted Near Key Undersea Cable
The 'Line', an asset of the notorious Russian shadow fleet, has recently been observed in close proximity to the Estlink-2 underwater power cable. This incident occurred on December 29, 2024, while the tanker was making its way from Vysotsk to Tallinn. The Finnish Coastguard took note of the vessel and established communication with the crew present on board. Notably, this tanker has been operating in recent months between Turkey and Russia. Currently, the coast guard does not believe that the 'Line' poses any immediate threat or is linked to the cable damage attributed to the tanker 'Eagle-S' on Christmas Day. However, the presence of this ship raised alarms since intelligence agencies have expressed concerns that Russia may be systematically surveying offshore wind farms, gas pipelines, as well as critical underwater power and internet cables located in the North and Baltic Seas, potentially for future sabotage efforts. On December 31, the vessel was reported as NUC at the coordinates 59° 60' N 026° 10' E. By January 1, 2025, the tanker had anchored off the coast of Porvoo, positioned at 59° 54' N 026° 06' E.
EU Implements New Sanctions Including 52 Ships Linked to Russian Conflict
On December 16, 2024, during a Foreign Affairs Council meeting, the European Union unveiled its latest sanctions initiative, now incorporating 52 new vessels, among which is the 'Line'. These ships have been identified as contributing to Russia's military operations amid the ongoing conflict. This comprehensive sanctions package aims to counteract the efforts to bypass the oil price cap imposed by Western nations, facilitate arms shipments, and transport pilfered grain. Following this addition, the total number of vessels sanctioned by the EU has surged to 79, predominantly those engaged in moving Russian oil or supporting military shipments. Beyond maritime targets, the sanctions also extend to 54 individuals and 30 entities linked to the conflict, including organizations and personnel from China and North Korea. Notably, two high-ranking officials from North Korea and seven individuals and companies from China are among those facing restrictions due to their provision of dual-use materials to bolster Russia's military. The overarching goal of these sanctions is to escalate operational costs for Russia by prohibiting access to EU ports and limiting maritime services.
Urgent Medevac Operation Conducted in the Alboran Sea
On the night of March 12, 2021, a critical situation unfolded in the Alboran Sea when a vessel traveling from La Coruna to Arzew urgently requested the medical evacuation of a seriously ill crew member. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Almería responded promptly to the distress call. In a swift operation, the SAR helicopter Helimer 203 was dispatched to the scene, successfully hoisting the crew member and ensuring their safe retrieval. Following the medevac, the individual was transported to the nearby airport and subsequently taken by ambulance to a medical facility for urgent care.
