The Crystal-Voyage: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

A tragic boating incident occurred on November 21, 2014, in the German Bight, resulting in the death of a 57-year-old crew member and serious injuries to two others, aged 36 and 38. The work boat belonging to the chemical tanker 'MTM Westport' plummeted 11 meters into the sea, approximately 10 miles southeast of Heligoland. At the time of the accident, the vessel was en route from Rotterdam to Hamburg in ballast and had dropped anchor. The emergency response was swift, with multiple rescue units dispatched, including the lifeboat 'Hermann Marwede' from the DGzRS Station Helgoland and 'Hermann Helms' from Cuxhaven. An SAR helicopter from the German Navy played a crucial role in the rescue, retrieving one crew member from the water. Simultaneously, the crew transfer boat 'SC Falcon' took on board one injured individual from the 'MTM Westport' and transported him to the 'Hermann Marwede'. Another injured crew member was also evacuated onto the 'SC Falcon', where he was subsequently lifted by the helicopter, which had earlier deployed a medical professional from the 'Ceona Amazon' to assist. Unfortunately, despite all resuscitation efforts, the 57-year-old crewman could not be saved. The injured crew members were airlifted to a mainland hospital for urgent treatment.
