In a significant legal move, the Colombo High Court in Sri Lanka has mandated the detention of the Vietnamese tanker 'Vinalines Glory' on Thursday, March 14, 2013. This decision follows an incident involving a shipment of contaminated diesel that was imported by the Lanka Indian Oil Company (LIOC), resulting in a substantial financial loss estimated at USD 2.5 million to the Indian oil entity. The vessel, which transported 4,500 MT of diesel, was declared to have met compliance standards when it left Singapore. However, subsequent laboratory tests conducted in Colombo indicated that the fuel was indeed contaminated, categorizing it as substandard. The LIOC has asserted that the contamination occurred during transit from Singapore, attributing no fault to either the supplier or the importer. The 'Vinalines Glory' is currently docked at the eastern port of Trincomalee as this situation unfolds. In mid-February, the state-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) previously commented on the nature of the consignment, emphasizing the need for high-quality fuel standards.
