On January 6, 2019, at 7:30 p.m., the wood chip carrier 'Daio Southern Cross' departed from Cai Lan, heading towards Mishima. Unfortunately, a tragic incident occurred in Ha Long Bay in the early hours of January 7 at 1:40 a.m. LT, when the 'Daio Southern Cross' collided with the inland cargo vessel 'NB-8836'. At the time of the crash, the barge was transporting 1,580 tons of cement and suffered catastrophic damage, ultimately breaking in two and sinking. While four out of the five crew members on the barge were rescued, the 32-year-old captain was later found deceased. In the aftermath of the collision, the crew of 20 on the 'Daio Southern Cross' remained safe and anchored at Hon Gai Anchorage to facilitate investigations into the incident. The IMO number for the 'Daio Southern Cross' is currently under verification as authorities continue to delve deeper into the cause of the collision.
