Firefighting Efforts Mobilized at Baker Platform Near Anchorage

Oct 03, 2014 23:13

In a significant firefighting operation, around five vessels, along with a cutter, helicopter, and additional aircraft, were deployed to combat a fire on the Baker Platform, located 45 miles south-west of Anchorage. The centerpiece of these efforts was the vessel 'Discovery,' which stayed at the incident site in cooperation with the Cook Inlet spill response vessel 'Endeavor.' Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control on October 2, 2014, after it had severely damaged the crew's living quarters, a situation that arose during a morning safety meeting. The flames were first detected early in the day, leading to the immediate evacuation of four workers via helicopter from the platform, which lies about 8 miles (13 kilometers) offshore. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and assessments indicated that the incident did not cause any environmental harm. The Baker Platform, operated by Hilcorp, is currently sustaining only one producing well, which was remotely shut off in response to the incident. Additionally, the subsurface pipeline that transports gas to Nikiski was also closed as a precaution. A unified command consisting of Hilcorp, the Coast Guard, and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation remained vigilant throughout the night, monitoring the platform, which held approximately 41,640 liters of diesel fuel, 8,000 gallons of drilling mud, and 1,000 gallons of hydraulic oil. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, although it is not believed to be related to production activities.
