On February 19, 2023, the diesel-electric icebreaker Kapitan Moshkin, operated by Rosmorport, skillfully led the M/V Nasiba Zeynalova safely into the Port of Taganrog, as reported by the Azov Ice Operations Headquarters. Following this successful escort, Kapitan Moshkin went on to assist two additional cargo vessels, M/V Adriatic Mariner and M/V Baltic Mariner, as they departed from the port. In the meantime, the Kapitan Krutov was managing a convoy of 13 ships from the Sea of Azov. As of 20:00 GMT on the same day, a total of 37 merchant vessels were present in the Sea of Azov, consisting of 22 vessels waiting, 12 en route, and 2 that were in distress. Additionally, there is a notable backlog of 63 ships prepared to sail from Russian ports in the Azov Sea, of which only 14 are equipped with ice-class hulls for navigating icy waters.

A dire situation is unfolding in the Azov Sea, where eleven vessels, including Palmali’s tanker Nasiba Zeynalova, are grappling with the harsh reality of being trapped in ice. As of February 11, the Nasiba Zeynalova has reported depleting food supplies and fuel, with reserves lasting only two more days and fresh water running low with just nine days remaining.
