Collision Update: VLCC Dream II and MSC Alexandra Incident Analysis
On August 3, 2016, a maritime incident occurred involving the Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Dream II and the container ship MSC Alexandra. This unfortunate event led to the loss of 10 empty containers, with five landing on the deck of the Dream II and another five tumbling into the sea. In a positive development, four of the containers that sank in Singapore's waters were successfully recovered by 9:30 AM on August 6. Efforts are ongoing to retrieve the fifth container, which is located in Indonesian waters, with the local Protection & Indemnity club representative of MSC Alexandra coordinating the recovery. Currently, MSC Alexandra is docked at the Pasir Panjang Terminal under PSA Corporation, where it will discharge its remaining containers before heading to a shipyard for extensive repairs. Meanwhile, the Dream II has anchored safely in Singapore and is also preparing for necessary repairs. Thankfully, there were no injuries or oil pollution recorded, and shipping traffic in the Singapore Strait remains uninterrupted, with port operations continuing as normal. The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) has launched an investigation into the incident.
Collision Between VLCC Dream II and MSC Alexandra in Singapore Strait Raises Concerns
In a surprising incident on September 30, 2023, the very large crude carrier (VLCC) Dream II and the container ship MSC Alexandra collided in the Singapore Strait, approximately 2 nautical miles southeast of Sebarok Island. The two vessels were operating on intersecting routes, with Dream II navigating eastward within the separation scheme, while MSC Alexandra was entering the scheme from Singapore. The collision resulted from a serious infringement of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (ColReg) governing vessels on crossing paths. Following the impact, Dream II sustained considerable damage to its bow, while MSC Alexandra experienced significant harm to its port side. The incident caused about a dozen empty containers to tumble overboard from MSC Alexandra. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or instances of water pollution arising from the collision. Local maritime authorities have launched an investigation to determine the underlying causes of the accident. Preliminary reports indicate that the duty officer on board Dream II may have neglected ColReg rules, as MSC Alexandra β which had the right of way β needed to be granted passage into the separation scheme. Furthermore, a breakdown in communication and potential misunderstandings between the duty officers of both vessels contributed to the collision. Both ships have been secured at anchorage off Singapore and will require repairs and thorough inspections before they are allowed to resume operations. At present, both the VLCC and the container carrier are reported to be in stable condition, presenting no immediate risk to their seaworthiness.
Iran Dispatches Almost 2 Million Barrels of Oil to Singapore Aboard VLCC Leadership
Iran has commenced the transportation of approximately 2 million barrels of fuel oil to Singapore, marking the first shipment of its kind since June. This information comes from a source based in Iranian ports. Current shipping data indicates that the Iranian-owned supertanker Leadership, a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), is scheduled to arrive in Singapore, recognized as Asia's premier marine fuel trading hub, in early October. The Leadership recently set sail from Iranian waters earlier this week. Notably, this supertanker was one of three vessels docked off the coast of Kharg Island, which is a crucial export facility for Iran. According to the port source, 'The vessel departed three days ago.' As of now, AIS tracking data reveals the ship is navigating past India's western coastline.
