Termination of Charter Contract for 'Energos Power' by Deutsche Regas
In a significant development for the energy sector, Deutsche Regas has announced the termination of the charter agreement with the federal government for the 'Energos Power,' one of the two LNG vessels stationed at the 'Deutsche Ostsee' liquefied gas terminal located in Mukran on the island of Rügen. The decision follows what the company described as a 'ruinous pricing policy' enforced by Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH (DET), which is fully owned by the federal government. DET currently manages four LNG carriers across key ports in Germany, including Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel, and Stade. At the 'Deutsche Ostsee' terminal, the LNG operations are powered by two vessels: the 'Neptune' and the 'Energos Power.' Notably, Deutsche Regas has not chartered the 'Neptune' from the federal government; instead, it was acquired from the energy supplier, Total. The 'Energos Power' was urgently procured by the federal government amidst the gas supply crisis in 2022, with Deutsche Regas appointed as the operator. At the time of the agreement, it was reported that the charter arrangement was expected to involve a substantial payment of 500 million euros to the federal government until 2032. This recent development reflects mounting financial pressures within the LNG sector and raises questions about future operational strategies at the 'Deutsche Ostsee' terminal.
