Tragic Collision at Sea: Turkish Fishing Vessel Capsizes, All Crew Members Lost

Nov 12, 2020 18:32

In a heartbreaking maritime disaster on November 11, 2020, at 5:50 a.m., the Turkish fishing vessel 'Polat Bey' (MMSI: 271073177) was involved in a catastrophic collision with the tanker 'Ephesos.' The tragic event unfolded approximately 15 nautical miles off the coast of the Karataş district in Adana, at coordinates 36° 18' 12" N, 35° 13' 30" E, as the tanker was en route from the BTC Terminal in Ceyhan to Gibraltar. Following the collision, 'Polat Bey' capsized and was left drifting upside down in the water, prompting fellow fishermen to bravely attempt a rescue by climbing onto the vessel's keel. The ship's captain swiftly initiated a search operation and awaited assistance from the Turkish Coast Guard. The Turkish Coast Guard responded promptly, deploying three patrol boats and a team of divers to the scene. Tragically, they recovered the bodies of four crew members during their search efforts, while the fifth crew member, Captain Metin Büten, was initially reported missing. Later that same day, he too was recovered. The deceased fishermen were taken to the Adana Forensic Medicine Institute for autopsy procedures. The vessel 'Ephesos' anchored at coordinates 36° 18.78' N 35° 8.99' E, near the site of the incident. In the wake of this tragedy, both the local Harbour Master's incident investigation desk and the Public Prosecutor's office have opened investigations to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the collision. A surveyor panel from the state authority, classification society, and P&I Club is expected to conduct an assessment onboard the 'Ephesos.'
