On the morning of September 27, 2012, the chemical tanker "CT Longford" experienced a significant navigational mishap while en route from Colon to Porvoo. The vessel, carrying a cargo of 8,000 tons of ethanol, was departing the northern lock in Brunsbüttel and veered unexpectedly to port, striking the pier owned by Sasol and colliding with a piling managed by the Maritime Authority. The allision resulted in considerable damage to the eastern section of the pier, while the impacted piling was completely submerged beneath the water's surface. The tanker itself sustained damage on both sides of its foreship. Following the incident, the "CT Longford" was secured at the Navy Pilings located on the south side of the Kiel Canal, where it was also detained pending further investigation. Divers have been assigned to conduct a thorough inspection of the ship's hull. Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the vessel encountered difficulties while transferring control from the starboard yardarm to central operations. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, and crucially, no pollutants were released into the surrounding waters. The Brunsbüttel water police are continuing their investigation into this incident.
