Recent investigations have uncovered alarming details regarding two Russian fishing vessels, 'Lira' and 'Ester', which have been stationed in the Faroe Islands for several years. These ships have reportedly been equipped with military radio equipment, prompting serious concerns about their potential involvement in espionage activities. Danish lawmakers are calling for urgent action following the revelation. The situation came to light during a routine inspection in Kirkenes, Norway, where authorities discovered military-grade radios onboard as the vessels returned from the Faroe Islands. Johan Roaldsnes, head of the Police Security Service (PST) in Finnmark, noted that the installed radios possess capabilities to transmit and receive military communications, marking a significant security threat for the region. Between 2015 and 2022, 'Lira' and 'Ester' have made over 200 port calls in the Faroe Islands, raising alarm bells among defense officials. Rear Admiral Nils Wang, the former head of the Navy, categorized the ongoing presence of these vessels as a direct threat to both the Faroe Islands and the Commonwealth of Nations. While the Faroe Islands have imposed a ban on Russian ships due to geopolitical tensions, exceptions are made for fishing vessels under their existing fishing agreements with Russia.
