Panaji, India - A vital rescue mission took place on September 15, 2021, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Indian Coast Guard and Mormugao Port Trust. The operation was sparked by a medical emergency involving a 31-year-old crew member from the chemical tanker 'Fairchem Katana.' Amit Kumar Singh experienced a severe diabetic complication while the vessel was positioned approximately 250 nautical miles off the coast of Goa. The distress call was initiated on the night of September 14, when Singh reported severe discomfort due to an episode of diabetic ketoacidosis. In response, the Maharashtra Regional Control Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai coordinated with the Goa Coast Guard, leading to a quick diversion of the tanker towards Goa. All local authorities, including port control and agents, were alerted to facilitate a swift medevac process. The 'Fairchem Katana' reached the inner anchorage of Mormugao around 3 a.m. on September 15. However, rough sea conditions posed a significant obstacle during the evacuation. A specially assigned tugboat from Mormugao Port Trust was dispatched to assist in the medevac. Upon arrival at the port, Amit Kumar Singh was carefully transferred from the tanker to the tug, named 'Ocean Spirit,' which transported him to PMP berth no. 10. Here, a medical team from the Coast Guard was on hand to administer immediate first aid before he was subsequently transported to a hospital in Chicalim for further treatment. This successful operation highlights the critical role of maritime safety teams and their preparedness for medical emergencies at sea.
