Working Conditions Aboard the Federal-Iris

On February 22, 2018, a significant incident occurred involving the bulk carrier 'Federal Iris', which had 21 crew members on board and was situated 120 miles west of the Columbia River entrance. The vessel encountered a malfunction in its main diesel engine components, leading to a localized explosion that prompted immediate emergency measures. Acting swiftly, the crew initiated salvage operations and enlisted the aid of the 'Denise Foss', an emergency response towing vessel stationed in Neah Bay, Washington. The Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Portland was alerted to the situation when the 'Federal Iris', en route from Chaangzhou to Longview, reported a marine diesel engine casualty. Fortunately, all crew members were unharmed, but the explosion rendered the main propulsion system inoperable. Prior to the incident, the 'Federal Iris' was already facing operational restrictions due to a loss of propulsion and a malfunctioning ballast water treatment system. To ensure ongoing safety and compliance with maritime regulations, the Coast Guard had scheduled an examination of the vessel upon its arrival at its intended docking location. On February 23, the 'Denise Foss' reached the 'Federal Iris' to assist with towing operations, which were expected to take approximately 48 hours to reach Seattle. The tow successfully arrived at the APL Seattle Terminal on February 25.
