Four Tankers Stripped of Flags Over Sanction Violations

Aug 31, 2020 09:08

In a significant crackdown, the tankers 'Giessel', 'Ekaterina', 'Lerax', and 'Amfitriti' have lost their flags following investigations into serious allegations of transporting Iranian oil in direct violation of stringent U.S. sanctions. These vessels made clandestine trips to Iranian waters back in 2020, collectively loading millions of barrels of oil. This operation was part of a sophisticated scheme where both Iranian and foreign vessels manipulated their tracking systems to obscure their participation in breaching U.S. sanctions. Initially registered under the Caribbean nation of St. Kitts & Nevis, the decision to remove the flags of these tankers reflects the St. Kitts & Nevis Ship Registry's firm stance on sanction violations. A spokesperson for the registry stated, “The St. Kitts & Nevis International Ship Registry regards any infractions of imposed sanctions with utmost seriousness and will respond decisively to any breaches involving vessels under our flag.” The 'Giessel' was de-flagged on August 4th after reports highlighted its unauthorized visit to a port in Iran; this decision was soon followed by the removal of flags from the remaining three vessels. According to public records from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), these four tankers are no longer recognized under the St. Kitts & Nevis flag, and their nationality is now classified as 'unknown.' While these tankers may seek re-registration under a different state in the future, the loss of their flags is anticipated to complicate their operational capabilities in the short term. The IMO's records indicate a complex network of companies owning each vessel, with three of the tankers ultimately managed by the Indian company Floretta Ship Management, while the fourth is associated with Ravel Ship Management, another Indian firm.
