Bashundhara Group Expands Fleet with Recent Supramax Acquisition
In a notable trend throughout 2023, Bangladeshi shipping companies have been actively acquiring vintage Japanese-built vessels, and this week Bashundhara Group continues this momentum with the purchase of a supramax bulker. The company has finalized a deal for Pacific Carriers Ltd's (PCL) well-established vessel, the Atlantic Mazatlan, which boasts a deadweight tonnage of 50,300 dwt. The sale price for this ship was reported at $4.7 million. To provide some context, PCL previously acquired the vessel for over $14.3 million back in 2012. This acquisition marks yet another significant step in Bashundhara's shipowning strategy, which has seen them collaborating with Singaporean shipowners in recent transactions. Just a few months earlier, in July, Bashundhara purchased another vintage PCL supramax, the Oshima-built Atlantic Altamira, with a dwt of 51,000, for nearly $4 million, subsequently rebranding it as Worldera 1. Additionally, the company took possession of the 48,000 dwt bulker Blue Sapphire for around $3 million, which has been reflagged as Worldera 2. As Bashundhara Group continues to expand its fleet, the maritime industry is keenly watching its strategic moves in the secondhand market.
