LPG Tanker Crystal Sunrise Collides with Astro Saturn Near Singapore

Apr 17, 2018 20:48

In a maritime incident that occurred on April 16, 2018, at 2:30 a.m., the LPG tanker "Crystal Sunrise" collided with the oil tanker "Astro Saturn" while navigating off the coast of Singapore. The incident unfolded as the "Crystal Sunrise", chartered by the Japanese liquefied petroleum gas firm Gyxis, was in the process of taking on a pilot at a designated station about one mile south of Tuas Extension. During this maneuver, it struck the "Astro Saturn", which was under charter by European trading house Trafigura, carrying a load of fuel oil. This unfortunate collision led to a significant release of 1.796 tonnes of liquefied butane gas. Damage was reported on the "Crystal Sunrise", particularly affecting a ballast tank and causing a leak from one of its gas cargo tanks, alongside damage to its bow and port side anchor. Fortunately, both vessels were quickly stabilized, and the crew of the "Crystal Sunrise" successfully managed to contain the gas leak. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) conducted an assessment, concluding that the dissipated butane was swiftly carried away from Singapore's coast by the prevailing winds, mitigating potential environmental risks. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries among the crew members of either vessel. However, as a precaution, eight staff members from PSA Marine who were in the vicinity at the time received medical check-ups at the National University Hospital, all of whom have since been discharged. Following the incident, both vessels anchored safely at Kupuk Anchorage. Notably, the "Crystal Sunrise" has maintained an impeccable safety record with no history of inspection deficiencies. In contrast, the "Astro Saturn" had undergone its last inspection at Vostochny, where inspectors had identified certain documentation-related deficiencies.
