On the afternoon of October 12, 2023, a significant ammonia gas leak occurred from the LPG tanker Gas Columbia, which was docked at the third berth of Yuzniy port, located on the Black Sea in Ukraine. The leak, which resulted from a malfunction in the cargo pipeline, took place shortly after the tanker had taken on a load of ammonia. Approximately 200 liters of ammonia were released, forming a hazardous vapor cloud. Quick action was taken by port firefighting teams along with three firefighting boats, which utilized water cannons to dissipate the toxic cloud. In response to the incident, the port authority implemented a partial evacuation of the port's staff. By 18:30 LT, the emergency response efforts were successful, and the dangerous cloud was fully dispersed. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported during this incident.
