The captain and first officer aboard the 'Agath' are facing serious allegations after they allegedly discharged contaminated wash water into the North Sea. Authorities from the Hamburg public prosecutor's office, alongside the water police in Stade, have launched a formal investigation into this environmental violation. The incident took place shortly after the tanker docked in Cuxhaven between June 18 and 29, 2018, following its earlier journey from Rotterdam, where it had emptied six tanks containing two distinct chemicals. During the voyage from Rotterdam to Cuxhaven, the tanks remained uncleaned as there were initial plans to reload both chemicals. However, upon arrival in Cuxhaven, the orders changed, leading to a situation where only one chemical was to be loaded. Instead of properly cleaning the tanks, the vessel set sail back into the North Sea and unlawfully discharged the wash water mixed with the hazardous chemical EDC. Following the discharge, the 'Agath' made its way to Stade, prompting prosecutors to suspect that this was an intentional dumping operation. As part of the proceedings, both the captain and first officer were required to pay a security fine totaling €21,450, reflecting the anticipated penalty for their actions.
