On December 7, 2023, the chemical tanker 'Fairchem Copper', while traveling from Cartagena to Algeciras, made a significant discovery eight nautical miles south-southeast of Punta Polacra. The vessel reported encountering a drifting rubber boat carrying 19 migrants. In response to the situation, Spain's maritime rescue agency, Salvamento Marítimo, promptly dispatched the search and rescue vessel 'Salvamar Spica'. This vital operation resulted in the safe rescue of the migrants, who were subsequently transferred to Almería for further assistance.
