Pioneering Surgery on Global Mercy: A New Era for Pediatric Care in Senegal
On March 8, 2023, the Global Mercy™, the largest civilian hospital ship globally, made history in Dakar by conducting its first surgery on a young patient, four-year-old Amadou. Born with leg deformities that rendered even simple tasks like sitting to eat a painful ordeal, Amadou's journey towards healing began aboard this unique floating facility. His treatment plan includes two surgeries, a significant milestone in a country where no fully qualified pediatric orthopedic surgeon currently practices. Although a medical intern has completed specialized training aboard the Africa Mercy during past missions in Senegal, this operation heralds a new chapter for pediatric surgery in the region. Amadou’s surgery is just the beginning, with over 40 scheduled pediatric orthopedic procedures lined up throughout the month. Over the next four months, the Global Mercy is set to deliver more than 800 safe and free surgeries across various specialties, including Maxillofacial, General, Pediatric Specialty, Orthopedic, Plastic Reconstructive, and Ophthalmic surgeries. Notably, the Global Mercy is on a historic mission, actively serving two nations from one port. Thanks to an invitation from the Senegalese government, it is anticipated that up to 25% of the operated patients will hail from neighboring Gambia. Beyond its surgical endeavors, the Global Mercy operates as a floating training center, providing hundreds of hours of medical training throughout its time in Dakar. Volunteer healthcare professionals, in collaboration with local partners, are dedicated to educating over 600 local medical staff on critical topics such as safe surgical practices, mental health care, primary trauma management, SAFE obstetrics, neonatal resuscitation, life-saving anesthesia simulation training, and effective pain management. This pioneering mission embodies hope and healing, transforming the landscape of medical care in the region.
