Pakistan Navy Aids 'Gold Autumn' Bulk Carrier Fire Rescue in North Arabian Sea

Apr 13, 2026 13:19

On April 10, 2026, a major fire erupted aboard the bulk carrier 'Gold Autumn' while it was navigating the North Arabian Sea, approximately 200 nautical miles from the coast of Pakistan. Responding to a distress signal, the Pakistan Navy successfully executed a rescue operation, evacuating 18 crew members from the stricken vessel. The 'Gold Autumn', which was on a voyage from Shanghai to Sohar, required immediate assistance, leading the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency to activate its Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) and initiate emergency protocols. The Pakistan Navy dispatched the PNS 'Hunain', already patrolling the region, to provide crucial support. Navy personnel not only facilitated the medical care of the crew but also engaged in firefighting efforts and conducted a thorough technical assessment of the bulk carrier to gauge the extent of the damage. The evacuated crew consisted of nationals from various countries, including China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Indonesia, who were subsequently transported to Karachi for medical treatment before their repatriation. Following the stabilization of the situation, a fire damage assessment was carried out by the PNS 'Hunain'. The bulk carrier suffered extensive damage due to both an explosion and the ensuing blaze, which severely compromised much of the vessel’s superstructure. Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the explosion. Missile Attack Leads to Fire on Bulk Carrier 'Gold Autumn' in Arabian Sea

Apr 13, 2026 13:18

On April 7, 2026, at approximately 11 a.m., the bulk carrier 'Gold Autumn', carrying a crew of 22, encountered a series of missile strikes while navigating the Arabian Sea on its way to Sohar port, just ahead of a US-Iran ceasefire agreement. The assault ignited a severe fire between the third and fourth cargo holds, prompting the ship's crew to seek refuge in the accommodation area. Unfortunately, another missile hit the vessel shortly thereafter, causing flames to intensify above the accommodation and extensively throughout the ship. With the main engine rendered inoperable, the captain ordered the crew to head to the emergency steering gear room for manual navigation. With essential systems failing, including the main engine, generator, and steering, the captain made the critical decision to abandon ship around 12:40 p.m. As the fire spread and smoke engulfed the area, some crew members attempted to deploy the starboard side lifeboat, but lost it to the turbulent sea when its ropes broke. The perilous conditions made it too risky to jump into the churning waters in pursuit of the lifeboat. The crew then turned their attention to the portside lifeboat, even though it too was threatened by flames. Four crew members managed to board this lifeboat, but soon faced another setback—the lifeboat's engine failed, leaving them at the mercy of the strong waves. Hours later, just as darkness fell, they spotted the passing vessel 'Eunice'. Using flares to signal for help, they successfully attracted the attention of the nearby crew. Unable to maneuver closer, the crew of 'Eunice' helped the men row to safety. Once back on the 'Eunice', communication was established with the owning firm, which subsequently reached out to the Pakistan Navy for assistance. On April 8, at 8 a.m., the Pakistani Navy ship PNS 'Hunain' reached the scene and successfully rescued 14 crew members from the compromised 'Gold Autumn' that afternoon. The team also retrieved the four crew members from the 'Eunice', transporting them all to Karachi. Four others chose to remain on board the damaged vessel, opting for a tow back to Oman. Efforts for the repatriation of the crew involve communication between the ship’s owning firm's agent and the Deputy High Commission in Karachi. On April 10, Md Shakawat Hossain, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers' Association (BMMOA), reached out to the Deputy High Commission for vitally needed administrative support in procuring travel permits for the five Bangladeshi crew members. Meanwhile, representatives from embassy offices in China, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Vietnam began proceedings for their seafarers' repatriation, with no response yet from the Bangladeshi embassy.
