Grand Dahlia Towed to Safety After Engine Failure Near Vigo

Dec 05, 2025 11:35

On December 4, 2025, the vehicle carrier 'Grand Dahlia' encountered a critical engine failure while making its way from Le Havre to Vigo, prompting a request for aid from Salvamento Marítimo. The incident unfolded more than eight nautical miles northwest of Cabo Home, approximately ten miles from the picturesque Cíes Islands, right at the entrance to the Vigo estuary. Salvamento Marítimo swiftly dispatched the tug 'María de Maeztu' (IMO: 9429091) from Vigo to assist the drifting vessel, which had slowed to a mere 1.7 knots after losing propulsion. By noon, the 'Grand Dahlia' was classified as Not Under Command (NUC) at coordinates 42° 17' N 009° 02' W, making safety a top priority. The 'María de Maeztu' managed to connect with the 'Grand Dahlia', providing essential towing support. This operation was further reinforced by the tug 'Don Inda' (IMO: 9338010). Fortunately, the damage was successfully addressed, allowing the 'Grand Dahlia' to finally enter port under the escort of the salvage tugs. Originally slated to dock at Bouzas vehicle terminal at 11:30 a.m., the ship ultimately reached its destination at 6 p.m. UTC, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the CCS Vigo of Salvamento Marítimo. This incident underscores the importance of maritime safety and efficient rescue operations in safeguarding vessels at sea.
