On the afternoon of May 15, 2018, the tanker 'Wisby Atlantic' encountered a significant mishap, running aground on a sandbank in the Amazon River at coordinates 00 20N 050 37W. Situated approximately 40 miles downstream from Macapá, the vessel was in the process of navigating upstream to the port of Manaus with a substantial cargo of 50,000 tons of fuel. The grounding occurred due to the tanker straying onto the incorrect side of the channel, leaving it stranded at a water depth of 14 meters and facing the imminent risk of hull rupture amid strong tidal conditions. In response to the emergency, a tugboat from Companhia Docas de Santana (CDSA) was deployed to assist in freeing the tanker from the sandbank. By 5 p.m. on the same day, the vessel's forepart was successfully released, although it remained stuck from amidships to the aft. Later that evening, renewed efforts were made to refloat the 'Wisby Atlantic.' With the tide in their favor, the vessel was ultimately freed by the morning of May 16 and subsequently relocated to the Fazendinha anchorage area, arriving there at 6 a.m. and awaiting inspection by port authorities. Notably, the presence of a pilot aboard in this region is considered optional. As of May 17, the tanker remained moored at Santana anchorage, Macapá, positioned at 00° 3.83' S 051° 6.22' W.
