On March 30, 2025, the 'Hanseatic Spirit,' carrying around 200 passengers, found itself trapped in thick ice after departing from Kemi, where ice accumulation reached up to 70 centimeters in the Bothnian Bay. In response to the situation, the Finnish Maritime Administration deployed multiple icebreakers, including the 'Kontio' and 'Polaris,' to assist the ship which, despite its Polar Class 6 certification, struggled against the formidable ice barriers near Kemi and Oulu. The icebreakers successfully carved a navigable path, escorting the 'Hanseatic Spirit' through the icy waters at a speed of ten knots. After an arduous 200-mile journey, the ship managed to reach the ice-free waters of the Baltic Sea close to Lulea.
