In a remarkable display of maritime rescue operations, a Filipino crew member aboard the vessel 'Hellas Poseidon' was airlifted by a Portuguese Air Force EH-101 helicopter on the morning of June 17, 2023. The dramatic medevac took place approximately 41 nautical miles west of Cabo Carvoeiro, located in the Peniche region. The 24-year-old crew member was experiencing severe abdominal pain, in addition to vomiting and other distressing symptoms. After a swift and coordinated response, the helicopter successfully landed at Figo Maduro Airport, where medical personnel promptly transported the patient to a local hospital for urgent treatment.

On April 11, 2020, the United States Coast Guard successfully rescued a solo sailor from his vessel, the 'Serena', situated around 200 miles southeast of Cape May, New Jersey. The dramatic rescue unfolded in the evening when the tanker 'Hellas Poseidon', traveling from Mohammedia to Philadelphia, alerted the Coast Guard's Delaware Bay command center at 5:15 p.m. after overhearing a distress call broadcasted on VHF-FM radio channel 16. Upon spotting black smoke approximately two miles away, the crew of the 'Hellas Poseidon' identified the struggling 25-foot sailboat. They reported that the 'Serena' was crewed by a single individual who was experiencing significant challenges, including flooding and loss of communication equipment due to an electrical fire amidst tumultuous seas. While the 'Hellas Poseidon' was unable to directly assist the sailor due to hazardous weather conditions, its crew stayed on site to provide reassurance until help could arrive. In response to the emergency, aircrews from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, launched both an HC-130 Hercules aircraft and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. Upon reaching the scene, the aircrew assessed that the weather was too severe to deploy a rescue swimmer and equipment directly onto the yacht. Instead, they instructed the sailor to don a lifejacket and enter the water to meet the awaiting rescue swimmer. The skilled swimmer quickly recovered the sailor, and both were successfully hoisted into the helicopter. The man, who had been attempting to navigate from North Carolina to New York, found himself in a treacherous storm that led to flooding and a critical electrical fire on board his sailboat. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Coast Guard and the tanker crew, he was brought safely to safety.
