On November 12, 2017, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) ASR duty crew, in collaboration with the South African Air Force (SAAF) 22 Squadron and Western Cape Government Health EMS, sprang into action after receiving an alarming report from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC). A 32-year-old Filipino crew member on board the vessel 'SKS Spey,' which was en route from New Orleans to Singapore and approximately 200 nautical miles off the coast of Table Bay, was suspected of having suffered a stroke (Cerebrovascular Accident - CVA). In response, two SAAF 22 Squadron Oryx helicopters were readied, along with two ASR teams, two pilot crews, two EMS rescue paramedic teams, and two SAAF flight engineer crews, all briefed for a swift operation. At 4 p.m., the helicopters ascended from Air Force Base Ysterplaat and met the ship 175 nautical miles from Cape Town. NSRI ASR rescue swimmers and EMS rescue paramedics were lowered onto the 'SKS Spey' to assess the patient, who was found to be in stable condition. The crew member was then hoisted into the helicopter and transported by EMS rescue paramedics to Groote Schuur Hospital, where he was placed under the care of hospital staff. This critical operation concluded successfully at 6:30 p.m., showcasing the effective collaboration of maritime and emergency services.
