Maersk Tankers Pioneers Drone Delivery with Sweet Treats for Crew

Mar 09, 2016 10:44

In a significant milestone for the maritime industry, Maersk Tankers has successfully executed the first ever delivery to its vessel via drone technology. In a nod to Denmark's well-known cookie culture, the crew aboard the Maersk Edgar received a delightful surprise: a tin of biscuits delivered from the sky. This innovative trial utilized the LE 4-8X Dual Atex drone, designed by the French firm Xamen and certified for use in potentially explosive environments with ATEX zone 2 approval. The drone features an octocopter design with an impressive wingspan of 104 cm and stands 40 cm tall, capable of reaching speeds of up to 16 meters per second. Maersk's announcement emphasized the potential of drone technology to streamline operations, stating, “Drones could significantly reduce time and costs for deliveries and inspections across the Maersk Group – provided they are reliable and completely safe.” Markus Kuhn, Supply Chain Manager at Maersk Tankers, highlighted the economic benefits, explaining the challenges associated with traditional delivery methods. "There are high costs for delivering small parcels on board, such as urgent spare parts or correspondence, due to the necessity of using a barge," he noted. This pilot program marks a thrilling step forward in maritime logistics, showcasing how modern technology can enhance efficiency and improve supply chain management in the shipping industry.
