On October 1, 2020, at 1:30 a.m., the bulk coal carrier 'Hong Dai,' carrying a partial load of coal from Baltimore to Norfolk, ran aground in a soft sandy area approximately a quarter mile northwest of Sewell’s Point, with coordinates 36° 58.13' N 076° 19.92' W. Remarkably, on October 2, the vessel was successfully refloated by seven tugs during high tide and subsequently moored safely at position 36° 59.58' N 076° 19.11' W in a designated anchorage just west of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.
