On January 21, 2020, at 4:45 a.m., the MT Horizon Maru experienced a harrowing encounter when two armed assailants boarded the vessel in the Kabil waters of the Riau Strait, located off the eastern coast of Batam. The attackers approached the ship in a small boat, carrying sharp weapons and intent on theft. However, the crew of the Horizon Maru displayed remarkable bravery, managing to confront the perpetrators and successfully apprehending one of them. During the struggle, one crew member sustained facial injuries. Following the incident, the tanker promptly issued alerts to nearby vessels and notified local authorities via VHF Channel 16. The patrol boat 8002 responded swiftly to the scene to provide assistance. At the time of the attack, the Horizon Maru was anchored in Kabil waters, awaiting clearance to dock at Kabil pier.
