On October 13, 2024, the 'HOS Mystique' began recovery efforts for the broken turbine blades from Vineyard Wind’s AW38 turbine, located off the southern coast of New England. This operation is part of a continued cleanup effort following the significant blade failure that occurred on July 13, 2024. The recovery mission is projected to last approximately two weeks. Equipped with a robust 100 metric ton knuckle boom crane and a remotely operated vehicle, the HOS Mystique is focused on the disabled GE Vernova turbine situated on foundation AW38, which lies southwest of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Accompanying this recovery operation are three local fishing vessels: the 'Kineo', 'Lucitano', and 'Saints & Angels'. Fragments of the 350-foot turbine blade, composed of delicate fiberglass and resin materials, have been reported drifting across southern New England waters for weeks, prompting municipal officials in Nantucket to maintain regular communication with Vineyard Wind about the operational progress. The goal is to retrieve larger pieces that have settled around the turbine foundation. In order to efficiently manage the situation, an additional vessel has been assigned to collect any smaller debris that may dislodge during the recovery process. The initial debris recovery was successful on October 13, and operations resumed mid-week. This comes three months after the blade breakup, which resulted in temporary beach closures and prompted shoreline cleanup efforts on Nantucket Island.
