The British government has stepped up its efforts against the notorious Russian Shadow Fleet by sanctioning 30 vessels, including the 'Thea', involved in illicit oil transport operations. This significant action, enacted on November 25, aims to disrupt Russian oil revenues, which have fueled its ongoing military aggression in Ukraine. In tandem with the sanctions on these vessels, the UK has also targeted two Russian insurance companies, Alfastrakhovanie PLC and VSK, that have played a key role in enabling these operations. These sanctioned tankers have collectively transported over $4.3 billion worth of oil and its derivatives throughout the past year. With this latest sanctions package, the total number of vessels sanctioned under the UK's purview has reached 73, making the UK the leading nation worldwide in tackling the shadow fleet. Furthermore, the UK government is urging international allies to join this critical initiative, with 46 nations already participating in the coordinated effort. The vessels linked to the shadow fleet are notorious for engaging in deceptive practices and are often poorly maintained, creating hazards for maritime safety and increasing risks to other vessels traversing the seas. By clamping down on these vessels and their insurance providers, authorities aim to clear shipping lanes of dangerous traffic, enhancing safety for all maritime operations. Under the new sanctions, the vessels will be prohibited from entering UK ports, and the UK authorities retain the right to monitor and, if necessary, detain these ships. Moreover, these vessels are set to be removed from the UK Ship Register, effectively terminating any existing registrations. They will also be barred from enjoying benefits associated with price cap exemptions, even if involved in qualifying oil transaction activities.
