Maersk Tankers Launches Ambitious $35 Million Fuel Efficiency Retrofit Initiative
In a bid to enhance fuel efficiency, Maersk Tankers has announced a substantial investment of up to $35 million dedicated to a comprehensive retrofit programme aimed at reducing fuel consumption across its fleet. Commencing this month, the first Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) set for retrofitting is one of the company’s renowned 'I-class' vessels - either the Ilma Maersk, Isabella Maersk, or Ingrid Maersk, which will undergo upgrades at a shipyard located in Singapore. This retrofitting initiative is set to focus on equipping various owned tankers with cutting-edge fuel-saving technologies, including Becker Mewis propeller ducts and innovative propeller boss cap fins. Over the next two to three years, Maersk Tankers aims to screen and retrofit approximately 70 vessels within its fleet. Tommy Thomassen, Vice President of the technical organization at Maersk Tankers, confirmed that the programme's success will be evaluated through before-and-after sea trials, anticipated to demonstrate fuel efficiency improvements ranging from 5% to 8%. Each VLCC retrofit process is designed to take about 15 days, allowing for minimal disruption to operations as the company takes significant steps toward more sustainable shipping practices.
Great Eastern Shipping Welcomes VLCC 'Vasant J Sheth' from Hyundai Heavy Industries
Great Eastern Shipping Company Ltd. (G E Shipping) proudly announced the delivery of its latest acquisition, the 318,000 dwt Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) named 'Vasant J Sheth,' received from Hyundai Heavy Industries Ltd. (HHI) in South Korea this morning. This delivery marks a significant milestone for G E Shipping, as 'Vasant J Sheth' is the final vessel from an order of three VLCCs placed with HHI in April 2010, all of which have now been successfully contracted for sale to the same buyer in the first quarter of FY12. In a related development, just five days ago, G E Shipping inked a deal to sell 'Jag Pradip,' a Medium Range (MR) product carrier. This well-maintained vessel, built in 1996 and boasting a capacity of approximately 45,600 dwt, is slated for delivery to its new owners in Q1 FY2013.
