On November 25, the UK government took decisive action by imposing sanctions on 30 vessels linked to the notorious Russian Shadow Fleet, including the 'Neomi', which have been implicated in illegal oil transport activities. This move also targeted two Russian insurance companies, specifically Alfastrakhovanie PLC and VSK, recognized as facilitators in this operation. The sanctions are intended to cut off vital oil revenues, hindering Russia's military aggressions in Ukraine. In the past year alone, these tankers have facilitated the transportation of over $4.3 billion worth of oil and its derivatives. With this latest package, the UK's total sanctions against the Russian Shadow Fleet now encompass 73 vessels, marking it as the leading nation in this global effort. The UK government has encouraged other nations to join in this initiative, and so far, 46 countries have responded positively. The shadow fleet's operations are characterized by deceptive practices and subpar maintenance, posing significant risks to maritime safety and contributing to a hazardous environment for other seafarers. Therefore, targeting these vessels and their insurance providers is crucial not only for human safety but also for clearing shipping channels. The newly sanctioned tankers will be barred from UK ports, with UK authorities holding the authority to direct their movements and detain them if necessary. These vessels will also be systematically removed from the UK Ship Register, with any current registrations being revoked. Furthermore, they will not qualify for price cap exemptions even if they engage in transactions that would otherwise meet the criteria under the Oil Price Cap Exception.
