Dramatic Long-Range Medivac Operation Near Blacksod

Oct 07, 2016 11:42

In a remarkable multi-agency operation, the Malin Head Coastguard, in collaboration with the UK Coastguard, successfully executed a long-range medical evacuation from the vessel 'Advantage Avenue' during the night of October 5-6, 2016. The distressed ship was located an impressive 183 nautical miles west of Blacksod, County Mayo, presenting a significant challenge for the rescue teams involved. Upon receiving the emergency alert while the vessel was initially reported 400 miles off the coast, the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) Malin promptly deployed the R118 helicopter from Sligo. Meanwhile, the UK Coastguard stood by with backup, repositioning their helicopter R936 to Sligo as well. As the situation unfolded, MRSC Malin took charge of coordination, and the R118 helicopter managed to winch the injured crewman to safety once the ship was within reach. The injured individual was subsequently transferred to an awaiting ambulance at Sligo Airport, marking the successful conclusion of a high-stakes rescue operation.

Tragic Disappearance of Indian Sea Cadet Umashankar Mahto in Greek Waters

Mar 29, 2013 23:15

In a heartbreaking turn of events, 22-year-old Umashankar Mahto has gone missing after reportedly jumping into the sea near Greece. Prior to his disappearance, Mahto expressed deep emotional distress in his diary, detailing the "mental torture" he endured at the hands of the chief officer aboard the m.t. True. His writings included accounts of verbal abuse and a lack of basic necessities, such as food, which left him feeling hopeless about pursuing his dream of making his family proud. Mahto's diary entries were shared with his elder brother, Jayshankar Mahto, who resides in Pune. On February 19 at 4 a.m., when ship staff attempted to wake him, he was unresponsive, and his cabin remained locked. It was discovered that his life jacket and winter jacket were missing, and the railing near the lifeboats had been tampered with. Noel Alphonso, General Manager at Andromeda Shipping India Pvt. Ltd., which facilitated Mahto's placement, stated that upon receiving the missing cadet report, the m.t. True retraced its course for an extensive search operation that included efforts from the Hellenic Coastguard and Turkish vessels. A life jacket belonging to Mahto was found at night, but after a thorough search, operations were called off 36 hours later. The Maltese authorities are set to conduct a formal inquiry since the m.t. True is registered under Malta. Meanwhile, the vessel is heading to Turkey. The Directorate General of Shipping in India will also initiate an investigation. Jayshankar Mahto revealed that his brother, who obtained his Diploma in Nautical Science in Mumbai, had joined the ship on November 28, 2012. In a call made to their father, a retired school principal in Jharkhand, Umashankar failed to mention his troubling mental state. "My brother faced severe abuse, was depraved of food, was falsely accused of theft, and was restricted in his movements aboard the ship," Jayshankar lamented. The family remained unaware of his dire circumstances until they read his diary, which poignantly depicted his despair. His final notes reveal a yearning for kindness, as he thanked his captain and fellow cadets for their support while expressing shame over his treatment. He acknowledged a fellow officer, referred to as "Sawant," who showed him compassion and vowed to remember him fondly. Umashankar's writings conveyed his sense of helplessness; he expressed deep regret toward his family and requested that they remain uninformed about his ordeal on board, lamenting the unjust retribution he faced for minor issues.
